All Rusticmania artwork and designs are created by award winning artist Roger Coolbear.
From a very young age, Roger has always been very artistic and spent much of his youth painting, drawing and creating models. He achieved his first Art & Design GCSE aged 14, followed by 2 more Art GCSEs before leaving secondary school.
Being a lover of the great outdoors and nature, Roger pursued a career in forestry and tree surgery.
Having spent years in forestry, Roger started milling some of the Oak and Ash he had felled to create rustic furniture. From this point, he got back into artwork and started sculpting wood. From birds of prey to wild animals and mythical creatures Roger, creates beautiful and detailed lifelike sculptures.
Amazing unique pieces of artwork made from wood or metal. Bespoke commissions are welcome: we can create large or small designs to be freestanding or hung on your wall...
How about commissioning your own pet portrait, beautifully hand-burnt into wood (Pyrography) or a flying bird of prey, hand-carved and finished with pyrography and metal feet.
This exciting commission, located in Kent, takes fantasy and realism in sculpture work to a whole new dimension. The Sea Lion crest is half lion and half fish, magically emerging from the water, presenting his fleur de lis to the world.
Exquisitely detailed facial features are carved from one single piece of English Oak, right down to the teeth and gums. Fire and a small amount of paint were added to accentuate the features, in addition to the wire whiskers.
All commissions are created specifically to meet each client's individual requirements and needs.
As an Artist, I strive for realism whilst still maintaining the timber's natural beauty, blending both the wood and the animal together.
What makes a great sculpture is very much the same as a good photo: being able to capture a beautiful and surprising moment.
Steel is often used in place of wood, either for finer details, or as an anchor. These realistic buzzard feet are made from steel threaded rod, welded and formed into claws, hiding where the bird has been pinned to this piece of sandstone.

To quote the client who commissioned this sculpture of an Osprey above; "I don't just like it, I love it!". After I had completed the osprey, she sent a very kiond email: "Finally I want to thank you again for such a wonderful work of art - it lifts my heart every time I look at it!"
This sculpture stands 2.5 metres tall at the clients driveway in Monmouth, South Wales.

These pieces are perfect either indoors or outdoors. Each creation is sculpted around the flow of the wood grain, so as to enhance its natural beauty.
They can be hung from a wall, fence, or above your front door, adding presence and character to your home or garden.
Check out the symmetry of the wood grain in the tail and the alignment of the owl's body to compliment the natural crack in the tail too.
Each piece is priced individually and will vary in size. For easy hanging, sculptures have preinstalled hardware and also have an optional backlight to allow them to stand out as a unique feature.
Please contact us for a commission; name your chosen animal and we can draft a bespoke design for you.
These are exceptional pieces, unique and made to last, with a satin finish coated in oils. The tops are sculpted from 2.5" / 3" thick Oak boards and can be made to your specifications.
After mapping out details on the timber with a piece of charcoal. The initial carving starts off with the chainsaw, after rough caving other power carving tools are used such as angle grinders with various grinding and sanding disks. Finer work is then done with gouges and chisels. After tidying up, finer detail is added with a Dremel. The carvings are then sanded down with various orbital sanders. Once sanding is complete the blowtorch is used for shading and marking plumage. Finer details are added with the pyrography pen.

Roxy's portrait is on an Ash canvas, approximately 12 x 18 inches.
Roxy is a Jackapoo, so her features include fantastically curly poodle-style hair. This was achieved on the portrait through concentrating on the highlights - burning through some of the shaded background with the blowtorch and then removing the highlighted areas of the curls with a Dremel sanding tip.
Roxy's portrait was protected with fixative upon completion.
Diesel's portrait is on a Western Red Cedar canvas, approximately 12 x 9 inches.
Diesel is a Miniature Schnauzer. His portrait was done with pyrography and acrylic paint to show off the subtle shiny grey tones of the Dog's fur. This style is called Pyro painting.
Teddy's portrait is on an Oak canvas, approximately 12 x 9 inches.
Teddy is a Dachshund. His portrait was done with pyrography and acrylic paint to add some highlights to his reflective coat and add a bit of colour to his black and tan markings. This style is called Pyro painting.
Frank is a French Bulldog, with highly defined features - he has fine, smooth hair and required careful and meticulous detailing - a great many hours went into this portrait.
Most of the piece was done using pyrography pen, a fine liner pen and white pencil. Some colouring on Frank's paws was finished with coloured pencils.
A spectacularly realistic portrayal of a much-loved dog.
Lizzie's portrait uses a different technique to Frank - a similar style to Roxy's portrait (above). Lizzie was a brown and white Collie.
Background shading to create Lizzie's fur was added using a blowtorch, and then highlights were created by removing the burnt areas with Dremel sanding tip to make the toufts of fur really stand out.
For effect, a woodland nightscape was created through burning a dark background and highlighting, again using the Dremel.
Lizzie's portrait was coated with lacquer to protect it and give the piece a beautiful sepia effect.
Willow was a beautiful crossbreed, with well-defined features.
English Oak was chosen for the canvas, and after sketching out the structure and correct proportions of Willow, details of the face were added using pyrography pen and some shading effects were done with the small blowtorch.
Highlights were created using oil-based white pen and white pencil. Finally, the portrait was protected forever with fixative.
All our furniture is made of local timber, sourced from beautiful woodlands in the Southeast of England.
All wood is milled on site from dead or dying trees. This has a better impact on the environment.
Oak Benches cost £595 but on speciel summer offer of only £395!
The Prosecco Bench is a beautiful rustic design, perfect to perch yourself on in the evening.
Two large flat arm rests just happen to be level, making them the perfect place to plonk your glass of plonk on!
All outdoor benches are coated with Osmo oil 420 for durability.
Although the Prosecco Benches are of a similar design and dimensions, they are still all unique.
Epoxy resin is used to fix and fill cracks and knots with colours. This transforms what once was a potential weakness into an exciting and individual feature.
Inspired by totem poles and patterns seen in the natural wood grain, some styles incorporate animal shapes into the furniture.
The animals are created with a chainsaw and angle grinder. Extra shading and depth is given by carefully burning the wood with different tools.
Designs are all made from either Oak or Ash timber.
The timber is 1.5" / 2" thick (40mm / 52mm thick).
All Prosecco Benches are planed and sanded. Then coated with epoxy resin.
This shows off the wood grain, toughens up the sap wood, keeps the water out and also makes them easy to clean.
It is advisable to keep the benches covered when you can. The biggest culprit for ruining any wood finish is the sun! However, all benches can be recoated after a couple of years if needed.
Requests for different designs are welcome ... such as this easily portable bench on wheels!
